Deer Creek Sporting Clays Update May 5th 2008

Happy Cinco de Mayo! We had a super week with many casual shooters, three corporate groups Aegon Insurance, Shumaker Loop and Kendrick, Tridium Software Group and the first fund raiser for the Tampa Area Safety Council on Saturday. Many people discovered that clay shooting is fun and a safe sport and we have made many converts this week, possibly even some addicts judging by the comments we heard after they had tried sporting clays with us. We had guests from many countries this week so the message will go far and wide.

Regulars will notice that we have moved some targets on Red and almost all targets on the Blue Course this week - although not everyone is delighted with the new targets on Blue 8 – but as Cathy said to one shooter – that is a very English target!

We will be setting the Red Course this week for the NSCA shoot on Saturday, if you come out Friday to shoot and you are entered in the NSCA shoot you will not be allowed on the Red course at all. The Red Course will stay set for two or three weeks, but for June we will be moving the shooting cages back into the trees to exploit some of the shade.

May 18th Women and Kids Free Clinic Five Stand

The May Clinic is now totally full!  We will open registration for the June clinic on May 17th. Please note for the month of June ONLY, we will hold the clinic on the FOURTH Sunday in June – the 22nd, because we will be having the Father’s Day Breakfast and Shoot on the THIRD Sunday of the month.

May 31st        Berean Academy Fund Raiser

The Berean Academy has recently opened a beautiful new building in Lutz on SR 41 and their Athletic Director Will Robertson needs additional sporting equipment so they are running a fund raiser for the School. We have already had folks come and start practicing for the event so it looks like it will be a good one. We have their sign up brochure in the cabin - please come and support a local school in a worthy event.

Tip of the Week

This time we are talking about the White Course Station 2 – this is the hardest station on the White Course. Both targets come from behind the shooter and from the left. The issue most shooters run into is that they hold their gun too far back – i.e. to the left – so why is this less than ideal? The problem is that the targets are close and quite fast so they get past the gun very quickly and most shooters wind up chasing the clays. A better hold point is further to the right – almost at the point where you will shoot the clay. It is also preferable to hold below the line of the clays as they drop faster than most shooters anticipate, leading to shooting over the clay. If you hold further to right and lower, it is easier to catch the clay, and, providing you see the clay ABOVE the barrel when you fire, it will break.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Deer Creek

Deer Creek Sporting Clays Update April 28th

It was a good week for shooters at Deer Creek although both Cathy and I were fighting off the lingering effects of the ‘3 week Flu’  We are very grateful to Mary Wiedner, in the office, and Jared McQuinniff, Dakota Rayburn and Chris Russell for their work outside for helping us while we were sub par.

This last week we had casual shooters, a Wedding Party and on Saturday the 2nd Annual Youth Shoot which was a great hit. We had almost 40% more shooters this year; we had Dads and Granddads shooting with their youngsters. We also had a large turn out of spectators who came to watch the shooters on the course and when they collected their trophies.

Many Thanks to Richard Daniel for both bringing a large squad of shooters from Silver Dollar, and for helping Cathy with the photos of the prize giving – you can see the results of his handiwork on the web site photos page.

This was a fun event, and everyone remarked on the 5000 kilowatt grins on the faces of the shooters. It is hard to single out everyone but I do want to add one name to the list of winners – AJ Pascua came to the Free Clinic on Sunday and entered the competition the next Saturday – he had never shot a shot gun before Sunday but he tackled the single shot class on Saturday – well done AJ.

Here are the winners – first by age then by gauge

Tenderfoot –        Grade 5 and Under           Brian Vogel

Cubs                     Grade 6 to 8                      Jack Holloway

Wolves                  Grade 9 to 12                    Zack Maine

Single Shot         Brian Vogel

28 Gauge            Zack Maines

20 Gauge            Tied between Aaron Pleus and Will Ray,

Aaron took it with his score on the secret station

Tip of the Week

Well you cannot be right all the time, and often not for the reason that you expect. Here is the story – a couple of weeks ago I was discussing chokes with someone and he said he used Modified in his Benelli shooting the White Course, and he had wondered if he would do better with another choke, I said, well the targets on White are all full sized, show dome or belly and are not over 30 yards away so an Improved Cylinder choke would probably better. Unfortunately he took my advice and his score DROPPED. Oops. Well he came back so I said – OK let’s go and put YOUR choke and YOUR ammo on the pattern board and see what we see.  He had not used the pattern board so on Sunday afternoon we went over with some cardboard, a marker and few shells.

From 30 yards his IC choke hardly hit the paper – there were huge holes in the pattern, and it was no wonder that he scored badly. OK so let’s put in Modified – what a delightful pattern at 30 yards, the paper was well covered and the pattern was regular – in fact what I would expect with an IC choke. So it’s no wonder that he shoots well with the Modified because WITH THAT AMMO the choke shoots like an IC

I have previously seen a choked marked IC punch a hole about 5 inches in diameter in the paper at 40 yards so we KNEW that was not right. It is a good idea to know where your guns shoot and what kind of pattern you get with your ammo if you want to count X’s.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Deer Creek

Deer Creek Sporting Clays Update April 21st 2008

We are so fortunate to be in Florida at this time of year, it is just amazing to be out amongst the wild life at Deer Creek. This week we have seen the return of the deer to eat at 4:30, it must be that as the does get closer to giving birth they want to feed, we have seen 4 button bucks who are waiting for their horns to grow back, our foxes have been out again, and the butterflies in the woods are amazing.

We have seen lots of shooters this week and the Free Women and Kids clinic was a great success – we thank those of you who were unable to come on Sunday and took the time to cancel your reservation – it meant that we could offer your slot to someone else. Once again we found cross dominant shooters who are amazed that shooting off their dominant shoulder is actually more natural. We also countered the belief that a woman should shoot a 20 gauge because it has less recoil. When I am fitting people to guns, I find the best fit for them and check that they can handle the weight of the gun. Often a man will say that a 20 kicks less than a 12. This is a popular or at least common misconception. The 20 gauge shell may have less powder, and hence less energy, but if the 20 gauge gun WEIGHS less than the 12 then the Newtonian physics still applies. We had one woman surprised that she shot a 12, and mentioned ‘I was told a woman should shoot a 20’ so she tried both and found that the recoil was greater in the 20 than the 12. As I often say – the weight of the gun is both your friend and your enemy, a heavier gun absorbs more recoil, but is harder to swing on the target.

We had a good turn out for the Mid Florida Capri Car Meet – have a look at the photos on our web site. Each year we see some new faces and some old faces – Sorry Tim and Howie, err that did not come out quite right – perhaps I should have said “we see some drivers who had been to earlier meets’? Our Capri is now garaged until we sell it or it qualifies as a classic, but a total of 8 cars were driven to the meet. The farthest came from Miami – two came from there.

April 26th Deer Creek Youth Shoot

This weekend is the second Youth Shoot where every youngster has a chance to win twice – they will be in a classification based on their grade, and a classification based on the shotgun they used. So you may win, say, the Wolves classification, and, because you shot the highest score with a 20 gauge, you win the 20 Gauge trophy.

Several people have asked about parents also shooting and that is fine – the adult will get the 30 targets and the hot dog lunch but cannot win a prize. The shooters will score their targets and put them on the score sheet. Also another question – can a youngster shoot more than one gun – yes you pay a lower fee for the second score card – because you will have already bought lunch. First entry is $25; the second (or subsequent) entry is $15.

Here are the details of the shoot

Calling all kids! You don’t have to be an accomplished shooter to join the fun. This competition is for everyone from very inexperienced beginners to budding young competition shooters. Even if you have only shot once or twice this shoot is for you.

It’s not a registered shoot. Just some fun and a chance to try your skill compared to other kids in your skill and age range. Mom and Dad can join you in the shoot but the trophies are just for the kids! The shoot will be 30 birds over 5 stations, 3 report pairs on each station, except for the Single Shot class. It is open to any one in Grade 12 and below. Adults can shoot with their sons and daughters.

The cost will be $25 and that includes hot dog lunch in the picnic grove for lunch. Trophies will be awarded for each classification. A youngster can enter in more than one gauge class, if they are up to shooting that many targets. Registration opens at 8:30, shooting will start at 9AM, you can get a score card up to 10:30 and all score cards must be returned to the Cabin by 12 Noon.

Don’t miss this chance to try your skill in a fun, low-key environment. Please call 813-996-1970 to add your name to the list of shooters

Classification

The students will have two classifications- one according age and experience, and one according to the gauge of the gun they use.

Zephyrhills JROTC will be scoring as usual.

May 18th Women and Kids Free Clinic Five Stand

This will be held on the Five Stand from 1:30 until 3:30 PM ‘Kids’ are under 21. It is a totally free clinic – free coaching from a British Certified Shooting coach, free ammo, free clays, free gun rental, free eye and ear protection all included. Also, every person in the clinic gets a free copy of Sporting Clays Magazine – the magazine is very keen to promote the sport and after they heard about the clinic they send us a copy for each person each month.  If you have a gun bring it with you – we will check the fit and if it is not optimal, you can use one of our guns at no charge.

The clinic usually lasts 2 to 2½ hours. We need to stress that youngsters need to weigh at least 75-80 lbs to be able to handle a shotgun, this is more important than their age. If your child is not 75lbs or more please do not sign them up for the clinic, when they find they cannot manage the gun, they are very disappointed.

Please call us SOON to reserve your place the number is 813-996-1970. We opened the reservations sheet for the May Clinic this weekend and over half the slots are already taken. Each month the clinic fills faster and faster. One person even left a booking call at 7:58 AM Saturday! They were intending to make sure they got on the list.

Tip of the Week

Finger Pointing - no not that kind of finger pointing that politicians love to do, but using your finger while you are watching the show bird. There are two or three points to make here. If you wanted to say “look at that deer running across the grass” – you would point at it with the forefinger of one hand. Now when you point at a clay to break it you should also use the forefinger - of the front hand – if you are a righty then you should point your LEFT forefinger at the clay as you take your show bird. This will most accurately put the image of the flight line into your brain.

Also, as mentioned before you should follow the clay all the way to the end of its flight – either when it hits the trees or hits the ground. The third part of this tip is to then hold the gun with the front forefinger extended along the side of the forearm. You would not point at the deer with your palm flat, you would use the forefinger- so put it in the same place on the side of the gun and you will track the clay better.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Deer Creek

Deer Creek Sporting Clays Update April 14th 2008

That was a great week with good weather, lots of shooters, a visit from 24 members of the Allergan

Corporation, a Wedding Party on Friday, a great turn out for the Hernando Builders Association

Second Fund Raiser on Saturday and lots of folks enjoying both the warm weather at the beginning

of the week, and a cooler Sunday.

We have re-started putting complimentary bottles of iced water out on the courses since we have been

seeing high 80 degree temperatures again, but Sunday they did not get too much use. Look for the

blue and white coolers around the half way mark on each course.

We moved the White Course around quite a bit for the Hernando Builders Association shoot – we

now have TWO rabbit stations on the White course - one where there has not been a station before

in our time at Deer Creek – it is a quartering rabbit on what is now Station 5, and the other crossing

rabbit is at Station 10.

At this point the registrations for the Queen Elizabeth Small Gauge shoot do not justify us running

the events, so they are cancelled, but we will have some Birthday cake.

If you are wanting a slot in the Youth Shoot give us a call or send an email – we need to know how

many lunches will be needed.

The Critical date if you want to get into the Free Women and Kids Clinic on May 18th – call us

starting Saturday April 19th to reserve your place.

Tip of the Week

When I was being assessed as part of the CPSA certification process, one of Roger Silcox’s tests

was ‘does his student look like a shooter’? This is something that can be seen from a distance. It was

not the whole test, but it came back to me when we were talking to a couple in the cabin who had

just come in from shooting – he said that she ‘looked wrong somehow when she held the gun’.

Well we found out that the gun she was using was way too low in the comb and she was having to bend

her neck considerably to reach the stock, she could not get her face correctly on the stock, and her

eyes were at about a 45 degree angle to the horizontal. This is where gun fit is critical. Having checked

eye dominance, I brought out a sporting gun that has had a trap stock fitted and it has the right height

of comb. This coupled with the correct position of the cheek bone forward on the stock made him

say – “that’s it!  She looks right now”

Very often people struggle with their shooting form without realizing the disadvantage they are under with

a gun that only fits where it touches.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Deer Creek

Deer Creek Sporting Clays Update April 7th 2008

After last week’s perfect weather we lost quite a bit of shooting time this week due to thunderstorms and lightning. In fact we closed early on Sunday because of the storms crossing mid-Florida.

We had excellent news from the Florida State Shoot at Bradford, Ian Hurd, is the new Florida Junior Champion and he came third in the Residents AA class – great shooting Ian.

Tip of the Week

I usually base the ‘Tip of the Week’ on a question that someone has asked me on the course or in the cabin. On occasions people suggest topics for a Tip, and I am always open to suggestions.

If you shoot gun down, when do you start moving? This is not as daft a question as it sounds. I have had a couple of sessions this week where shooters were starting to move the gun into their shoulder before the target had reached the hold point. This lead to them ‘riding’ the target for too long, and, as usually happens when you are riding the target the brain gets all wound up in checking the distance between the target and the barrel. If your focus is flitting to and fro between the target and the gun you will most likely miss the clay as you will lose hard focus on the clay.

One of the advantages of shooting gun up is that it allows you to match the speed of the clay and move the gun onto the flight line at a compatible speed. If you get the timing right, you will find that you fire almost the instant the gun touches your cheek.

How do you tell you are riding the target – if the barrel and clay are together for more than a rough count of 1, 2, 3, 4 then you are riding the target – this is a rough guide, some longer shots do need more time.

We look forward to seeing you soon at Deer Creek
